Viburnum, or arrowwood, is an important genus of about 225 species of ornamental shrubs and small trees in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae. Native to America, Europe, and Asia, these plants produce simple deciduous or evergreen leaves, small white or pink flowers in flat-topped clusters, and small drupes.
Viburnums make attractive ornamentals, and many species are hardy in temperate North America. These plants enjoy sunlight, although they also do well in shade. The hobblebush, V. alnifolium, is a popular deciduous shrub that turns purple-red in autumn. Many species bear fragrant flowers. Some species are grown for their hydrangealike flower heads, including the Japanese snowball, V. plicatum. Numerous varieties have been cultivated to accentuate these highly valued ornamental characteristics.
