Tumbleweed is a common name applied to several plants that are dislodged and rolled along by the wind when mature or dead, dispersing seed as they are tumbled across dry flatlands. The most common tumbleweed in western North America is the Russian thistle, Salsola kali, belonging to the family Chenopodiaceae. It has reddish, spine-tipped leaves and small flowers. Another North American weed is Amaranthus albus, family Amaranthaceae; like all tumbleweeds, it has many curving branches that form a rounded basket. Hedge mustard, or tumbling mustard, Sisymbriam altiassiamum, family Cruciferae, has fuzzy branches, small leaves, and pale yellow flowers.
