Rhododendron is the generic and common name of approximately 600 species of flowering shrubs or trees, usually evergreen, in the heath family, Ericaceae. Approximately 10,000 named varieties are listed in the International Register and about 2,000 of these are available. Azaleas are also included in the genus Rhododendron, but they are generally excluded from the "true rhododendrons". The name rhododendron comes from the Greek and means "red tree". The plant's large, beautiful blooms appear in the spring in a variety of colors including red, lilac purple, white, light rose, apple-blossom pink, rosy lilac, and deep rose. The flowers are usually produced in trusses. Rhododendrons range from 12-m (40-ft) flowering trees to matlike ground cover.
