POINSETTIA
The poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima, is a showy flowering plant belonging to the SPURGE family, Euphorbiaceae. It is particularly popular at Christmastime as a potted houseplant. The poinsettia "flower" actually is bracts, or modified leaves, which usually are red, but also may be white or pink. At the center of the bracts are the tiny true flowers. The poinsettia thrives outdoors in subtropical or tropical regions, where it can reach heights of over 3 m (10 ft). Native to Mexico and South America, it must be grown indoors in cold climates; it is a popular garden shrub in southern states and California.
