The phlox family, Polemoniaceae, comprises about 300 species of popular flowering annual, biennial, and perennial plants native mainly to North America but also found in South America, Europe, and Asia. Close clusters of showy flowers are produced in tones of red, pink, violet, blue, buff, or white. The perennial species are among the most popular garden plants. Dwarf creeping varieties are also planted in rock gardens and used as edging plants, and tall, hardy varieties are used for midsummer perennial gardens. Two species commonly planted for this purpose are P. suffruticosa and P. paniculata. Phlox plants need rich, well-drained soil, high in organic matter, to bloom to their full potential.
