PANSY

PANSY

The garden pansy, a short-lived perennial, Viola tricolor (also classified as V. wittrockiana), is a member of the violet family, Violaceae. It is considered a descendant of the European wild pansy, V. tricolor, crossed with one or more other species of violets. The European wild pansy now also grows wild in North America, where it is known as the field pansy or Johnny-jump-up. The garden pansy grows to 23 cm (9 in) tall and bears rounded, flattened, five-petaled, velvety flowers of various colors and up to 13 cm (5 in) across. A number of species in the genus Achimenes, in the gesneria family, Gesneriaceae, are called orchid pansies, Japanese pansies, or monkey-faced pansies.
