Oleander, Nerium, is the common name for two species of evergreen shrubs belonging to the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. Native from the Mediterranean region to Japan, oleanders are grown outdoors in mild climates and are drought-resistant. All parts of the plant are poisonous if eaten. The common oleander, N. oleander, is the most widely grown species in the United States. Growing up to 6 m (20 ft) tall, it produces large, dark green, leathery leaves. The large, showy flowers range from white to bright red.
