GARDENIA

GARDENIA

The genus Gardenia comprises several species of flowering shrubs or small trees that belong to the madder family, Rubiaceae. Their flowers are sweet-scented. Gardenias are native to subtropical regions of the Eastern Hemisphere, where they grow outdoors, but they are also grown extensively indoors in greenhouses. Because of their need for warm, moist conditions, gardenias do not thrive as houseplants. Cape jasmine, G. jasmimoides, is a bushy shrub up to 1.8 m (6 ft) tall with glossy evergreen leaves and waxy-white, heavily scented flowers with 9 petals each.
