DELPHINIUM

DELPHINIUM

Delphinium is a genus of about 300 species of perennial to annual herbs in the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae, including many cultivated hybrids. The stately plants may reach a height of 2.5 m (8 ft) or more. The leaves are cleft, and the blue to white flowers, which grow on branched or unbranched spikes, have five asymmetrical sepals and four to six petals. Some delphiniums are poisonous to cattle. The flowers are also called larkspurs, but the garden annual LARKSPUR is placed in a separate genus, Consolida.
