Croton is the common name for plants of genera Codiaeum and Croton in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. Members of the highly colored Codiaeum genus are tropical shrubs. Combinations of yellow, green, red, pink, and purple are found in their leaves. Most of the many garden and houseplant varieties were originally selections from C. variegatum, variety pictum. All members of the large tropical and subtropical genus Croton are trees. Croton oil, a purgative, is extracted from C. tiglium, and C. eluteria yields cascarilla bark, which also has medicinal value.
