CONEFLOWER

CONEFLOWER

Coneflower is a common name given to plants in the genera Rudbeckia, Ratibida, and Echinacea, belonging to the composite family, Compositae. Coneflower, Rudbeckia amplexicaulis, has ligules of the ray flowers, which are 1.3 to 3.2 cm (0.5 to 1.25 in) long and often purplish brown at the base. It is found from Kansas to Texas and southeast to Georgia. Another species is R. hirta (BLACK-EYED SUSAN). The prairie coneflower, Ratibida columnifera, has a flower head with blunt-toothed, yellow, ray flowers and a conical disk of brown flowers; it blooms throughout the summer.
