Bloodroot, Sanguinaria canadensis, is a showy, early flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae. Found in the open woodlands of eastern and midwestern North America, the bloodroot has a single, symmetrical, white flower appearing on a leafless stem enfolded by one large, deep-lobed leaf on a separate stalk. Both the leafstalk and flower stalk grow from a perennial, underground rhizome that produces orange red sap. The generic name is derived from the Latin, sanguis, meaning "blood". The POPPY family, of which bloodroot is a member, is characterized by its milky or colored juice. Also included in the family is the Old World poppy, Papaver somniferum, from which opium is extracted.
