BALLOONFLOWER

BALLOONFLOWER

Balloonflower, P. grandiflorum, is the only species of the genus Platycodon in the bellflower family, Campanulaceae. Balloonflowers are perennial herbs native to eastern Asia and Japan. The large flowers are dark to pale blue, lilac, or white and are borne at the ends of the branches. The leaves are oval, and the buds are balloonlike before opening, hence the name. The balloonflower and its varieties are commonly planted as garden borders.
