ASPARAGUS FERN

ASPARAGUS FERN

The asparagus ferns, Asparagus, are any of 100 to 300 species of perennial herbs, woody VINES, or SHRUBS belonging to the lily family, Liliaceae. Although they are not true FERNS, they produce fernlike foliage. Native to the Old World but widely cultivated, they are grown as foliage HOUSEPLANTS and are sometimes used in flower arrangements. The flowers are white, greenish, or yellowish. The species most commonly called asparagus fern, or lace fern, A. setaceus, has leaf clusters arranged in a flat, triangular spray. Baby smilax, A. asparagoides myrtifolius, has broad, glossy leaves. Foxtail asparagus, A. densiflorus, has stiff, upright stems that are densely covered with tiny, needlelike leaves. Sickle thorn asparagus, A. falcatus, has glossy leaves.
