AMARYLLIS

AMARYLLIS

Amaryllis is a genus of South African bulbous plants that bear large, lilylike flowers and belong to the Amaryllidaceae family. The only true species is the belladonna lily, A. belladonna, which is native to South Africa. Plant breeders have produced varieties with white to red flowers, which are grown outdoors in some warm regions of the United States. The more common Amaryllises of horticulture, however, are species of Hippeastrum. Most are hybrids of the Peruvian H. vittatum. Single large flowers borne on 60-cm (2-ft) stems bloom in a wide variety of colors.
