Ageratum, a member of the aster family, Compositae, is a genus of about 29 species of herbs and shrubs native to central and tropical South America. Commonly called flossflowers, ageratums have clusters of small blue, white, or pink flowers with a pleasant odor. Because they flower for long periods, they are used as border plants in gardens and as summer bedding plants in temperate climates. One species, A. conyzoides, contains hydrocyanic acid, coumarin, and an alkaloid and is poisonous to animals.
